English

English belongs to the Germanic family of languages. It originated in England and currently, it is one of the most spoken languages in the world. During the course of history, English language has acquired a dominant position. It is the official and main language of many countries around the world. English is the most taught and understood among all known languages, as it serves as the second language in an enormous amount of non-English speaking countries.

According to approximate estimations, there are between 500 million to 1.8 billion people over the world, who speak or know English on some level, whether as a native or a second language. Out of the aforementioned population, between 300 and 400 million people are native speakers. English is the predominant language in the media, academia, science, business, aviation, diplomacy, tourism, entertainment, computers and the Internet.

Wide expansion and influence of the English language increased in the heyday of the British Empire, but it continued to spread even at a later period, especially due to the growing power of the United States in aspects of politics, military, economics, science, technology and culture.

English is the official language of the UK, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, Malta, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore and several countries in Latin America, Africa and the islands of Oceania. In the United States and Australia, English is not defined as an official language, although it is used by these countries’ governments and citizens more than any other language.

Whenever you visit another country, English is the go-to language to communicate with the locals. It plays a somewhat similar role worldwide to multinational countries with many communities having their own language, yet communicating in country’s primary official language. In the field of translation, English is the most in demand language worldwide. The reason for this is obvious:  most business and academic correspondence, multinational agreements and contents in all possible fields are conducted in English. Practically all companies and even small businesses translate their websites into English as a necessary move to push the activities forward, especially when seeking clients abroad or offering products for export. Journalists, students, businessmen, scientists, web developers… at some point, everybody encounter a necessity to search for content in English, because it either does not exist in the native language or there is more information available in English.

Fun fact: a new English word is added to the dictionary every two hours – almost 4,000 new words every year!
