Polish
Polish is a Western Slavic language and a part of Indo-European family of languages. It is relatively close to Czech, Slovak and Serbian. Polish is spoken by 38 million people in Poland – 98% of the population, which makes Poland one of the most homogenous linguistic countries in Europe. Large Polish communities in the US, Canada, Great Britain, Israel, Argentina, Brazil and Belarus comprise about 12 million more speakers.
Despite the similarities between Polish and the languages of its Eastern and Southern neighbors, many words that sound alike have a completely different meaning in Polish. For example, “frajer” (easily deceivable, naive) has little to do with the Czech “frajer” (handsome guy/boyfriend). Such differences are even spotted between Polish and non-Slavic languages, such as English – for example, the word “ordinary” sounds similar to “ordynarny”, which means “vulgar” in Polish.
The Polish alphabet is based on the Roman letters. However, 9 of the 32 letters in Polish alphabet are not present in any other language – ą, ć, ę, ł, ń ó, ś, ż, ż. In addition to these letters, Polish contains various combinations, such as cz, ch, sz, rz, dz, dż and dź, the combination of which leads to tongue twisters that even the Poles have a problem to pronounce correctly.
