Romanian
Romanian belongs to the Romance family of languages. It is spoken by 24 million people in Romania and Moldova. In addition, 4 million people speak it as their second language. Romanian is one of the official languages of the European Union and is the only Romance language spoken in Entire Eastern Europe.
Like in the case of various other European languages, Romanian grammar was significantly influenced by Latin. The alphabet, like in French, is composed of Latin letters with an addition of several other letters unique to Romanian. Many Romanian words, besides the lexicon derived from Latin, were borrowed from the Slavic languages, as well as from Modern Greek. It is the only Latin-influenced language that has three genders for nouns, similar to several Slavic languages.
With its long history of development, Romanian is known as one of the most interesting languages for linguists to study. The Romanian language is actually divided into 4 primary dialects: Aromanian, Megleno-Romanian, Daco-Romanian, and Istro-Romanian. Three of these dialects carry on across various countries, including Serbia, Albania, Greece, Kosovo, and Bulgaria, while Istro-Romanian is exclusively spoken on the Istrian Peninsula in Croatia.
Through extensive research, linguists have determined that Romanian and Moldovan are practically the same language. In writing, however, in the Soviet Republic of Moldova, the Cyrillic alphabet was used and in recent history, Moldova has asserted that their language is unique and has its own identity, causing multiple debates and conflicts with the Republic.
