Spanish
Spanish is spoken by over 400 million people as their mother tongue, making it second only to Mandarin in terms of native speakers worldwide. Overall, there are about 470 million Spanish speakers with native competence and another 80 million using Spanish as their second language, spanning over 40 countries and 5 continents. It is an official language of such countries, as Uruguay, El Salvador, Ecuador, Argentina, Bolivia, Guatemala, Honduras, Venezuela, Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Chile, Colombia, and of course, Spain, among many others. Spanish is also widely spoken in the United States.
Historically speaking, the first documents in Spanish were written in the 11th Century. The language has developed from “raw” Latin that was spoken in colonies of the Roman Empire and was later influenced by Basque and Arabic languages. It spread gradually throughout the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America. In a later period, pronunciation differences between various regions became more prominent (for example, differences between Spanish as it is spoken in Europe, compared to Spanish in South America).
Spanish is considered a relatively easy language to learn, although the differences between various regions make it much more complex than it seems at first. It is the second most studied language in the word and according to statistics, in three generations, 10% of the world population will be able to communicate in Spanish.
Mexico currently contains the largest population of native speakers with 114 million, followed by the United States with 50 million, 40 million of which are native speakers. Forecasts predict that by 2050, USA will become the largest Spanish-speaking country in the world. This is somewhat symbolic, considering the fact that the Spanish grammar, created by the Spanish Renaissance scholar Elio Antonio de Nebrija, was introduced in 1492 – the same year Columbus arrived in America.
